Frequently Asked Questions about NCPHP and its services.

How do I make a referral to NCPHP?

Confidential referrals can be made by calling 1-800-783-6792. Visit the Make a Referral page for additional information about the referral process.

What services does NCPHP offer impaired medical professionals?

NCPHP provides assessment, referral, monitoring, educational, and support services. Go to Program Overview: Program Services for details.

How is NCPHP funded?

NCPHP is a not-for-profit 501(c)3 organization. About half of the program’s funding is provided by a small portion of medical licensing fees through the North Carolina Medical Board. Additional funds are derived through an agreement with the NC Veterinary Medical Board, and other sources. Learn more about our Funding.

What happens to the referred physician, PA, or veterinary professional? Is his/her medical license in jeopardy?

Physicians, PAs and vet professionals who are licensed in North Carolina, who are not already known to their respective licensing Boards may remain anonymous so long as NCPHP can establish that they are safe to practice, or have withdrawn themselves from practice while in treatment.

What is the nature of the relationship between NCPHP and the NC Medical Board?

NCPHP operates under a Memorandum of Understanding with the NC Medical Board and NC Medical Society. Read more on the NC Medical Board web site.

Is the NC Medical Board informed about all referrals to NCPHP?

If the NC Medical Board or NC Veterinary Medical Board refers a physician, PA, or veterinary professional, it is with the understanding that relevant information regarding their ability to practice will be communicated as appropriate to their respective Board. Those individuals who are self-referred or referred by other entities such as groups or hospitals may remain anonymous as delineated above.

Under what circumstances is an anonymous referral reported to the NC Medical Board?

Anonymity is broken if the individual is unable to remain abstinent from substances, or other circumstances such that NCPHP cannot vouch for the individual’s ability to practice safely. This decision is made in conjunction with the NCPHP Compliance Committee.

What is a Caduceus meeting?

Caduceus groups are 12-Step fellowship meetings specifically for medical professionals. Meeting information can be found on our Caduceus meeting page in the Resource Center.

Where can I find information about physician health programs in other states?

The Federation of State Physician Health Programs maintains a complete listing of each state’s program including contact information and available services on their web site. It can be found at Federation of State Physician Health Programs.
