Warren J. Pendergast, MD, Medical Director
Dr. Pendergast attended medical school at the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis, and completed a psychiatry residency at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He served as Director of the Psychiatric Consultation Service at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte for nine years before accepting his first NCPHP position as associate medical director of North Carolina Physicians Health Program. He was named Medical Director in 2004. Dr. Pendergast is board certified in Adult Psychiatry as well as Addiction Psychiatry, and his professional associations include the American Psychiatric Association, NC Psychiatric Association, American Society of Addiction Medicine, and others. Dr. Pendergast assesses incoming referrals, recommends treatment options, and supervises the field coodinators' ongoing monitoring of each participant's progress. Dr. Pendergast also supervises the development and maintenance of NCPHP's participant database, and in-house computer technology. He is also responsible for presenting lectures to hospital medical staffs, medical executive committees, boards of directors, and other audiences as identified, for the purpose of educating North Carolina's healthcare professionals on the services and availability of NCPHP.
Joseph P. Jordan, PhD,
Clinical Director
Dr. Jordan has 18 years experience in treating substance abuse and
co-occurring disorders. He has worked in long-term residential programs
and coordinated both adolescent inpatient dual diagnosis and adult and
adolescent intensive outpatient treatment programs. Prior to joining
NCPHP, Dr. Jordan served as Ethics Officer and Director of Special
Projects for a national credentialing board. Dr. Jordan has previously
served on state and national committees and boards devoted to the
study, development, and refinement of substance abuse counseling
practice. He is licensed as a Clinical Addictions Specialist and
Professional Counselor, as well as certified as a Clinical
Supervisor.
Kim McCallie, Director, Program Operations
Kim has spent 19 years working with medical professionals, and the last 16 years with impaired practitioners. She has been with NCPHP since its inception. Kim provides administrative support to executive and clinical staff members; handles internal bookkeeping and liaises with NCPHP's accountants, Finance Committee Chair, and other financial and insurance institutions; administers employee benefits; assists in development and maintenance of NCPHP's database; acts as advocacy coordinator by reporting on status of participants to outside agencies; serves as Secretary/Treasurer of NCPHP's Board of Directors; organizes meetings and conferences in conjunction with Public Relations; and oversees all aspects of office management.
Carsten Thuesen, LCAS, Senior Field Coordinator
After 21 years at Readers Digest, Carsten made a career switch to substance abuse counseling 17 years ago and spent several years as a counselor at Amethyst Treatment Center in Charlotte. He has worked as Senior Field Coordinator for NCPHP for the past 13 years, and covers the western part of North Carolina, monitoring an average of 50 to 65 participants monthly. Carsten calls on physicians, physician assistants, and veterinarians in the field, to evaluate and assist in their recovery and their compliance with their NCPHP monitoring agreements.
Mike Cox, LCAS, Eastern Field Coordinator
Mike joined the staff of NCPHP in November 2003, following a lengthy career as a certified clinical addiction specialist with the Randolph County Mental Health Center in Asheboro, and as a primary counselor at Fellowship Hall in Greensboro. He serves as Field Coordinator for the eastern portion of the state, traveling to the homes, offices, and hospitals of physicians, PAs, and veterinarians under contract with NCPHP. He finds it very fulfilling to participate in the recovery process of those impaired practitioners seeking the assistance of our program, and regularly visits with 50 to 60 program participants each month, overseeing their progress, and offering advice and assistance whenever necessary.
Sid Kitchens, CSAC, Triad Area Field Coordinator
NCPHP welcomes Sid Kitchens, CSAC, as the new field coordinator for the Triad area (Guilford and Forsyth counties and other nearby locales). Mr. Kitchens and his wife Deborah Shaw live in Greensboro. Sid most recently worked with the Randolph County Mental Health Department and Walker Center Programs where he was a substance abuse counselor since 2002. Prior to that, he was employed by the Department of Corrections at the Piedmont Correctional Facility. Sid graduated from Guilford College with a BA degree. He is fluent in speaking, reading, and writing Spanish, which was a major asset particularly in his work with the Department of Corrections where he translated treatment materials and implemented a 90-day residential treatment regimen for Hispanic clientele. Sid's sense of humor and upbeat attitude are sure to be appreciated by the participants he monitors.
Mary Agnes Rawlings,
LCSW, Triangle Area Field Coordinator
Mary Agnes has worked in the treatment of addictive disease for 20 years; and has experience in both the public and private sector. She has taught undergraduate and graduate level courses in social work and theology over the years. Since 1999 she has been in private practice and contractor/consultant for mental health and substance abuse service providers in several Southeastern states. She has worked inpatient, outpatient, and private practice in treatment of individuals suffering from the disease of addiction. She holds a Masters of Social Work from Florida State and a Masters of Arts in Christian Spirituality from Creighton University. She is also a trained Spiritual Director of the Ignation Exercises. She is a licensed clinical social worker and is receiving leadership training as a Recovery Coach. Her passion is treating individuals who have suffered the effects of living with an addictive disease.
Nicole Trail, Case Management Coordinator
Nicole's position as Case Management Coordinator is the newest at NCPHP. She is responsible for gathering and entering information from monitors, therapists, and field coordinators into NCPHP's participant database; tracking contract compliance regarding meeting attendance and drug screen results; serving as monitoring coordinator for purposes of overseeing collection of urine drug screens; and disseminating results to clinical staff members.
